When the question comes up (and it does, somewhere between 17 and 23% of the time), we always answer the same.... "Because 'listening' involves so much more than volume."
The question, of course, is "What the hell does 'Play Loud. Listen Louder' mean?"
Fair question.
It's a kind of artsy-fartsy answer, we know.
It's the kind of thing someone says when they're trying to come across as "deep" or "cultivated." (Dare we say....pretentious?)
Okay, we admit it. It sounds kind of cool. It's a phrase we've been using online and in our e-mails for a mighty long time now. It sounds like it should mean something.
Maybe it does... in a way.
The thinking is (and Lord knows, we hate to think until it's necessary) ... Turning up the music is fine. We encourage it. Loud is good.
But music is ultimately more than that.
It is, for a lot of us, a lifeline. It is a loyal friend in a sea of inconsistency. It is always on time in a world of broken appointments. It is always there.
And within everyone's music collection is every emotion, feeling, question, answer and dream available to the human being. It's all in there.
That's why listening - really listening - regardless of what volume the music is coming at you, is - arguably - the most intimate experience available to us. Music can say it all even when we say nothing.
Thus.... "listen louder."
That's what we mean.
Perhaps, the slogan is best understood as "Play the music loud, if it suits you, but make sure you listen louder. For all it does for you, you owe it that much."
... or something like that.
